A 30W GaN charger can charge many USB-C laptops slowly, but it's best for phones and tablets. Here's what to expect.
Quick answer
A 30W GaN charger can slowly charge some USB-C laptops, but it's not a reliable daily driver for most models. It's best for phones, tablets, and emergency top-ups.
Why 30W isn't a laptop standard
Most full-size USB-C laptops (like a 13-inch MacBook Pro or a Windows Ultrabook) expect 45W to 100W for normal operation. A 30W charger can supply power, but the laptop may charge slowly, especially under load. For some Apple Silicon MacBooks and Chromebooks, 30W is enough for a slow charge, but don't expect fast top-ups during heavy use.
Frequently asked questions
- Will a 30W charger damage my laptop?
- No. USB-C Power Delivery negotiates wattage. A laptop will only draw what the charger can supply. Using a lower-wattage charger simply means slower charging, not damage.
- Which laptops work best with 30W?
- Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, etc.), Chromebooks, and some Windows Ultrabooks can charge, but slowly. Gaming laptops and workstations with dedicated GPUs typically require 65W or more and may not charge at all from 30W.
- Can I charge my phone and laptop at the same time?
- No. This is a single-port charger. For simultaneous charging, you'd need a multi-port GaN charger with higher total wattage.
- Is 30W enough for a tablet?
- Yes. Most tablets charge at 15-30W, so a 30W charger will provide the fastest possible charge for them.
